Instagram was launched over a decade ago in 2010 and ever since Instagram has managed to keep its users hooked by introducing new features time and again.

Today, Instagram approximately has one billion monthly active users, with India having the highest number of users at 180 million, followed by the United States and Brazil with 170 million users and 110 million users, respectively. It has been reported that an average human being spends around 30 minutes each day on Instagram. As per statistics, around 95 million photos and videos are shared each day on this widely popular app.

Pictures are a great way to give insights into a person’s personal space. And with applications like Instagram, socializing has never been easier. People find best friends and even soulmates quite accidentally on such platforms. Moreover, Instagram has been a great way to help celebrities increase their presence in people’s lives.

But one of the main factors at stake here is privacy. Social media giants like Facebook give users the option of hiding their friend’s lists. However, Instagram does not have any such feature, and neither are there any third-party apps that allow the possibility of anything similar.

This article gives you details on how you could hide your ‘following’ list from others. Read ahead to know more.

How to Restrict Others from Seeing Who I am Following on Instagram

Everyone’s Instagram profile displays the number of people they follow and the number of people that they are being followed by. Anybody can see the names of the people who are on either of the two lists.

There are three ways in which one can control who is viewing the following and followed by.

1. Control Who Views your Instagram Profile

The visibility of your Instagram profile determines who all can see the followed by and following lists on your profile. You have to turn it into ‘private’ so that your profile remains locked to those you do not approve of seeing your pictures, followed by and followers list.

Here is how to set your account into private mode:

  • Launch your Instagram account using the app. Navigate to the ‘profile’ icon located at the bottom of your screen.
  • Tap on the circle or three dots depending on iPhone or Android OS from the top right of the screen.
  • You will see a toggle beside the ‘Private Account’ tab. Enable it to ‘ON.’
  • Your account is now set to private mode.

Private mode means that only those requests you approve of can see your followers, followed by pictures that you share on your profile.

2. Block Existing Followers from your Instagram Account

The previous method helps you keep your profile safe from those who are not in your followers or followed by a list. But what if you wish to protect your privacy from someone who already follows you? Method 2 will help you tackle this situation. Here is how you can block your existing followers from viewing anything on your profile:

  • Launch the Instagram app, make sure you are logged in.
  • Tap on ‘followers’ or ‘followed by’ list. Either of the lists will show the respective people.
  • Using the search bar, type the name of the person that you want to block. Tap on the username. The person’s profile opens.
  • You will find three vertical dots towards the right of your screen. Tap on that and select ‘block.’
  • A pop-up asking ‘are you sure’ appears. Click on ‘yes’ and refresh the page by pulling it downwards.
  • You have now blocked the person.

Using method two will not allow the blocked person to find your profile on Instagram.

3. Removing Followers

By using method 3, you will be able to remove followers without having to block them. Here is how you can do it.

  • Launch the Instagram app. Make sure you are logged in.
  • Tap on ‘followers’ or ‘followed by’ list. Either of the lists will show the respective people.
  • Using the search bar, type the name of the person that you want to remove.
  • The profile appears, and beside the username, you will find an option called ‘remove.’ Tap on it.
  • Confirm by tapping ‘yes’ when the pop-up appears.

You have successfully removed the person from viewing your page. They can still locate your account on Instagram, but they will need to send you a follow request again if they want to view your pictures, followed by and followed list.

Also, this is possible only if your account is in private mode. Because otherwise, they need not follow you to view your data. They can even follow you without you approving of it.
