If you have been using Instagram for a while, you know that the “seen” tag is displayed right below the messages that are delivered and read by the target audience. So, whenever the recipient reads messages, the sender will know that the messages are read through the seen tag.

Now, what if you read a message you want to unread? Or, you simply don’t want the sender to know you have read their messages?

Fortunately, it is impossible to unread a message on Instagram. By marking certain messages unread, you can be assured that these messages will not get lost in the bundle of messages delivered and read.

In this post, we will share with you the ways to unseen and unread Instagram messages.

Does Instagram Allow You to Unread Messages?

You need to have a business account on Instagram if you want the in-app function to unread messages. There is, unfortunately, no direct way to unread any conversation on Instagram. For the Instagram business account users, there is a feature that allows you to unseen your business messages from the app only. It was launched pretty recently and is one of the most used functions of the platform.

If you open your Instagram business account, you will see the two tabs – primary and general on your inbox. The primary tab is for users who are important to you. You can add your family, relatives, friends, and others close to you to the primary tab. You will receive a notification every time someone from the primary tab sends you a message.

By putting the user in the General tab, you don’t get the notification when a sender sends a message to your inbox. In fact, you can keep the message in the inbox for as long as you want. You can check it whenever you have time. The best part is the primary tab is open by default in your inbox, so there is no way you will read the general messages unwillingly.

Even if you have a text from a user in the General or Primary section, here’s how you can unread the conversation.

How to Mark Messages as Unread on Instagram

As mentioned earlier, people with a business account on Instagram can mark their conversations unread in simple steps. It doesn’t matter whether the chat is in the primary tab or general tab, you always have the option to mark the texts unread and unseen from the Instagram app.

Here’s how you can:

  • Open your inbox and click on the three horizontal lines on the top of the screen. It looks like a hamburger icon.
  • You will get an option to select the conversation you’d like to delete or mark as unread.
  • Click on the conversation and select “more”.
  • Select “Mark as unread” from the available options.

What’s important to note here is that it is only a way for you to mark the conversation unread and not unseen. It is only a way for you to mark the conversation unread and save them to read later. Note that this option is not available for the desktop version yet.

How to Unread Messages on Instagram without Business Account

The above function is for the business account users only. So, you can use it if you have a business account on Instagram. Now, the important question is “what if you don’t have a business account”? Or, what if you want to unread a conversation on your private account? Is it still possible to unread a message?

You can simply not accept the request of the person trying to send you a message. It is possible to read the messages of strangers from the “message requests” section without notifying them that you have seen and read the texts.

Now, if you had already accepted their message request and it shows the seen sign every time you get a message from them, you can simply restrict their use. Instagram has a restrict option that allows users to restrict other users from sending messages or more.
