CBSE announces the result of classes 10 and 12 as per the Continuous & Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system in the form of CGPA to encourage students in more cognitive and reasoning thinking.
It is essential for students and faculty to be familiar with the new grading system to understand and analyze your overall performance.
What is CGPA?
CGPA or the Cumulative Grade Points Average is an educational grading system used in the educational sector. It is the average of grade points obtained by a student in all the subjects excluding the additional 6th subject as per rules specified by CBSE.
The cumulative Grade Point Average does not show the exact percentage rather it shows grades from A to E, which fall into a different range of percentages.
Where grade E is equivalent to a fail and the rest of the grades represent candidates to pass in the particular subject. Also, these grades are converted into points up to 10 in each subject.
CBSE has already started mentioning the CGPA on the report card but most of the students don’t know how to calculate it.
Recently CBSE provided a mathematical formula to calculate the percentage of marks and indicative equivalence of grade points in each subject and overall result.
- Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 X CGPA
- Subject-wise indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 X GP of a particular subject
In order to calculate CGPA, you need to add the GPs of 5 subjects excluding the additional subjects and divide the sum by 5 to get the result.
Why Multiply and Divide with 9.5?
You may be confused about why we were only using 9.5 as the multiplier and divisor to calculate CGPA and percentage.
Let’s clear this up.
CBSE board specified that it analyzed the result of the last five years and calculate the average marks of board exam candidates who scored between 91 and 100.
The average of the last five results stood at 95 marks or was close to 95.
As you know the equivalent grade point for 91-100 marks is A1 which is considered a full 10. The average mark of 95 is divided by 10 and the result was 9.5.
