The Cumulative Grade Point Average does not show the exact percentage rather it show grades from A to E which fall into a different range of percentages.

Where grade E is equivalent to fail and the rest of the grades represent candidate to pass in the particular subject. Also, these grades are converted into points up to 10 in each subject.

CBSE already start mentioning the CGPA on the report card but most of the students don’t know how to calculate it.

Recently CBSE provided a mathematical formula to calculate the percentage of marks and indicative equivalence of grade point in each subject and overall result.

• Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 X CGPA
• Subject wise indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 X GP of a particular subject

Let’s see how to calculate CGPA from subject grade points?

In order to calculate CGPA, you need to add the GPs of 5 subjects excluding the additional subjects, and divide the sum by 5 to get the result.

## Procedure to Convert CGPA to Percentage

• For Example, S1: 8, S2: 9, S3: 8, S4: 7 & S5: 7.
• The final sum will be: 8+9+8+7+7 = 39
• Divide the result by 5 to get CGPA is: 39/5 = 7.8
• Multiply CGPA with 9.5 to get a percentage.
• Your final percentage will be 74.1%.

Why Multiply and Divide with 9.5 Only?

You may be confused that why we were only using 9.5 as the multiplier and divisor to calculate GCPA and percentage.

Let’s clear this.

CBSE board specified that it analyzed the result of the last five years and calculate the average marks of board exam candidates who scored between 91 and 100.

The average of the last five results stood at 95 marks or was close to 95.

As you know the equivalent grade point for 91-100 marks is A1 which is considered as a full 10. The average marks 95 is divided 10 and the result was 9.5.
